Frequency: Monthly (6-10 issues per school year).
Format: Magazine style; small tabloid (approximately 11" x 13.5").
Color: Four-color and spot color.
Size: 32 pages, four-color on all 32.
Printing: Newsprint; The Daily Sentinel, Grand Junction, Colorado.
Run Size: Approximately 3,000 copies each issue. On campus— 1,900; City of Grand Junction—
700; Exchange— 350; File— 330.
Technology: Macintosh computers; Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop; Microsoft
Word; digital photography.
Funding: Approximately 90 percent of our budget comes from advertising sales (newspaper
and athletic programs); approximately 8 percent comes from a student activity fee;
approximately 2 percent comes from an administrative fund. We receive no formal budget
allocation from district or building educational funds.
Advertising Rates: Newspaper— $8.50 per column inch, with discounts for half- and full-page
advertisements and immediate full payment. Spot (one) color available. Athletic programs
(GJHS football and winter sports; district wrestling, basketball tournaments; and others).
Sizes: quarter, half, and full page; discounts for multiple programs and immediate full payment.
Outside Projects: (1) Produce and sell athletic game/tournament programs for GJHS and
School District 51; (2) Staff attends several local, regional, and national journalism workshops
and conventions; (3) Past projects include presidential debate analysis for Channel One;
participation in a national Public Broadcasting System “Democracy in America:
Correspondence with Correspondents Pen Pal Project” with Susan Page of USA Today; story
writers for Kids Voting Mesa County and The Daily Sentinel Kids Voting election results story;
and Kids Voting Voters Guide; (4) Newsprint recycling.

Awards: Individual staff members, as well as the newspaper itself, have won numerous local,
regional, and national awards. See additional web pages for specific awards.
Becoming a Member: Most students have taken Journalism I and Journalism II as either a
sophomore or junior. Juniors are typically staff members and seniors are typically editors.
Students apply in the spring of the preceding year. The application process typically involves a
performance assessment, an interview, and letters of recommendation. On average, there are
about 30 applicants for about 15 staff positions.

Adviser Experience: Mark Newton is certified as a Master Journalism Educator by the
Journalism Education Association. He is also the Colorado Director of JEA. In addition, he
serves as a liaison to the Colorado High School Press Association. Newton has been advising
student publications for 25 years, the last 19 at GJHS.
