Walking down the “Mexican” hallway, or
at least that is its stereotyped name, I
would probably never stop to say hello.
Most Anglos wouldn’t because they don’t
understand the language, but for me that’
s not an excuse. Speaking Spanish, I
understand their language but not their
culture. They just don’t seem like my
kind of people and from what I’ve seen
we don’t seem to share any interests. My
view, which may be stereotypical, is that
the Mexican people at our school are
confrontational. I don’t want to stare at
them for fear of having one of them
come up to me and start something. I
don’t know if that stereotype is accurate.
I’ve never completely believed
stereotypes, but I’ve also never
disregarded them as false.
My dad came here from Spain after he
met my mom. I’ve grown up speaking
both English and Spanish thanks to my
father who only speaks to me in English.
At the same time my mother has given
me a good serving of American culture. It
would be interesting to see how I would
have turned out culturally if my dad had
come here with a woman from Spain.

menos eso es su nombre estereotípico,
probablemente nunca pararía para decir
hola. La mayoría de los anglos tienen la
escusa que no hablan el idioma, pero para
mi no vale esa escusa. Entiendo la lengua,

quiero darles una mirada mala por miedo
de crear un enfrentamiento. No se si eso es
la verdad, nunca le han dado la razón a los
estereotipos, pero tampoco lo opuesto.
Mi padre vino aquí de España cuando se
encontró con mi madre. Toda mi vida he
hablado inglés y español igual gracias a mi
padre que solo me habla en español. Al
mismo tiempo, mi madre me ha dado
bastante cultura estadounidense. Sería
interesante ver como cabría culturalmente
en EEUU si mi padre se hubiera casado
con una española.
