It is true that stereotypes originate from
truth, but I’m tired of being stereotyped
as a gangster. I’m tired of walking into a
store and being followed like I’m some
sort of criminal. People shouldn’t be
judged unless you know them.
It’s hard to shine in a neighborhood
that’s dark and gloomy. If you’re raised
in a situation where you hear car alarms,
gunshots or screams at night, of course
you’re not going to turn out like everyone
else. Just think about it: If you have to
work every day to save money for your
family, you’re not going to have the same
opportunities as everyone else.
It’s hard when people see you as a
high school dropout when you’re trying
to keep your grades up. In reality, we’re
just trying to graduate. It’s hard enough
to keep your grades up, but it’s even
harder when no one thinks you can do it.
They just look at your skin color and the
way you dress and they think you can’t.
Some start believing it. They fall into that
trap and start acting like the stereotype.

Es verdad que los estereotipos tienen su
origen en un poco de verdad, pero ya estoy
harto de que se me imponga el estereotipo
de ser ungangster. Estoy harto de entrar a
una tienda y ser vigilado como si fuera un
delincuente. La gente no debe juzgarte sin
antes conocerte.
No es tan fácil brillar en un vecindario
oscuro y sombrío. Si te crías en un
ambiente donde las alarmas de coches,
disparos o gritos se escuchan casi todas
las noches, por supuesto que no serás
como todos los demás. Solo piénsalo, si
tienes que trabajar todos los días para
conseguir el dinero para la sobrevivencia de
tu familia, no vas a tener las mismas
oportunidades que los demás.
Es difícil cuando la gente te ve y piensa que
eres un perdedor quien abandonó la
escuela cuando en verdad tu estas tratando
de sacar buenas calificaciones y estas
tratando de graduarte. Es difícil mantener
calificaciones altas, pero es aun más difícil
cuando nadie tiene fe en ti. Solo ven el color
de tu piel y como te vistes, y piensan que no
puedes lograrlo. Algunos empiezan a
creerlo. Se caen en esta trampa, y
empiezan a actuar bajo ese estereotipo.
