| Peruvian Student Tries to Keep Culture Alive |
Moving to the United States was a huge
change in my life -- not only because of
the language but also because of all the
different cultures. Even though since I
was little we have moved a lot because
of my dad’s work. He is an engineer and
the company he works for sends him
around the world.
When I moved here first I lived in
Houston, Texas. It was not easy to come
to a new country and make new friends.
The majority of people discriminated
against others without a valid reason.
They would give you ugly looks and talk
about you. I don’t know why, but people
changed a little when I told them I am
Peruvian; it made things a little better.
Once someone threw food at me and I
never found out why. Another time a girl
wanted to fight me simply because she
didn’t like me. Some people may think
that these incidents were dumb, but they
really hurt me. Little things about this
country like these frustrate me
sometimes.

El mudarme a Estados Unidos fue un gran
cambio en mi vida. No solo por el idioma, si
no también por la diferente cultura que
existe en este país. Aunque desde muy
pequeña me he mudando varias veces por
el trabajo de papá. El es un ingeniero y lo
mandan por todo el mundo.
Cuando llegué a Estados Unidos viví un
año en Houston, Texas. Llegue para
empezar mi octavo y último año en la
escuela media. No fue nada fácil, me moría
de nervios, pero lo enfrenté y poco a poco
me acostumbre. No fue fácil hacer amigos
en un nuevo país. La mayoría de las
personas discriminan a los que son
diferentes sin tener ningún motivo valido. Te
miran mal y hablan de ti. Cuando les digo
que soy peruana, no se porque motivo, me
tratan un poco mejor.
Una vez cuando estaba en la cafetería me
tiraron comida. Jamás supe por que lo
hicieron. En otra ocasión una chica me
quiso pegar por la simple y sencilla razón
que no le caí bien. Algunos pensarán que
estas cosas son tonterías pero en verdad
me lastimaron mucho. Son cositas como
estas que me causan un poco de
frustración con este país.
