Orange & Black named Best of Show at National Convention
The Grand Junction High School student newspaper and several of its staff members earned national
recognition at the annual spring national high school journalism convention held last week in
Anaheim, Calif.

The Orange & Black was named first place Best of Show by the National Scholastic Press Association
in newspaper special issue category, second place in the publication Web site category and fourth
place in the newsmagazine category.

“This is quite the accomplishment,” said adviser Mark Newton. “It’s a big deal to earn one award, so
three is unbelievably awesome. The students have worked hard this year and it showed. I’m so happy for
their accomplishments. I am in awe of their talents.”

Tom Nelson is the Web master; and Zach Castle and Jamie Newton are this year’s co-editors.
The Best of Show contest judges only those schools with students in attendance at the convention in a
variety of categories.

Four students, all juniors who will be editors next school year, also earned awards in the national write-
off competition held at the convention, sponsored by NSPA and the Journalism Education Association.

Bekah Gallegos, superior (highest honors) in feature writing. (To get an idea of how significant this
accomplishment is, Bekah is only the fourth superior award winner we’ve had since 1995.)

Shandie Case, honorable mention in news writing.

Kirstin Maska, honorable mention in review writing
.

Chelsea Tomasi, honorable mention in newspaper news/feature photography.

“I’m happy for these students because they tried so hard,” Newton said. “I’m extremely proud of Bekah
earning a ‘superior.’ Only three other students since I’ve been here have earned that high of an award.
Bekah’s in some great company, so we have high expectations of her – and all the students who
attended the convention – next year.”

There were over 4,500 attendees at the convention – 1,869 entered the competition, 714 were winners
(161 superior, 241 excellent, 357 honorable mention in 50 categories covering newspaper, yearbook,
literary magazine, computer design, photography, broadcast and middle school journalism).
