A heartwarming tale of a compassionate family, “The Blind Side” is one of the best movies that has come out in the last year.
In perhaps the best acting of her career, Sandra Bullock stars as the stereotypical wealthy white woman with a perfect husband and intelligent children in a private school.
She immediately notices that her young son is speaking to “Big Mike,” a homeless teenager who attends private school purely for athletic purposes. She immediately takes an interest in the troubled teen. Surprising everyone, Bullock offers him a place to stay and the arrangement becomes permanent. Throughout the entire movie, Bullock shows extreme compassion for Mike and her acting skills shine.
The story itself is touching, and all of the actors and actresses involved perform extremely well. Teenagers will be able to relate to the struggles that Mike encounters while attempting to balance difficulty in school and his sports. “Big Mike” is an extremely large African American boy who many believe to be mentally retarded. He tests in the lowest percentiles of all areas, with the exception of testing in the 98 percentile in protective instincts. His protective nature shines through as he learns to love his new family and is willing to protect them by any means.
Every person will be able to identify with one of the family members, whether it be the teenage daughter facing peer pressure, the concerned parental figures, the annoying little brother, or the lost high school boy who is attempting to find his place in the world.
The family later hires a tutor for Mike and helps him qualify for an athletic scholarship. This movie is a story of unconditional love that can grow between families, despite the difficult times they encounter. “Blind Side” will be loved by all ages.
