The GJHS boys varsity basketball team improved to 4-0 in Southwestern League play and 12-4 overall on Jan. 26 with a 56-50 win over rival Central. Earlier that night, the Central varsity girls team improved to 2-0 in SWL play with a 59-44 win over the Tiger girls.
The boys game was tight throughout, with the Tigers hitting 14 of 17 free throws in the final quarter to clinch the win. Tommy Powers led Grand Junction with 16 points, with Jesse Smith adding 14 and Sam Morgan 11.
“It came down to making free throws,” Tiger coach Dutch Johnson said. “We’ve had three games where it came down to making free throws at the end to keep a lead.”
On the girls side, Central’s Amy Kame, one of the top players in the state, was simply too much for the Tigers. She scored 34 points to help the Warriors to an 11-3 record on the season. Grand Junction dropped to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the SWL.
The Tiger girls trimmed what at one point was a 15-point lead to just five points near the end of the third quarter, but Kame hit three free throws in a row to help lift the Warriors back on top by eight. The Tigers never threatened after that.
The Tigers were led by Fawn Brady, who had 15 points, and Paula Lage, who had 12.
Both the girls and boys junior varsity teams beat Central earlier the same day. The girls got out to a fast start and went into halftime with a lead of 32-0 before winning 54-7. The JV boys won by 14 points.
The Junction boys and girls next play Jan. 29 at GJHS in another set of SWL games, with JV games set to start at 4 p.m., the girls at 5:30 and boys at 7:30.
