Congenital Heart Disease, also known as CHD currently affects approximately 1.3 million people in the United States, as many as 36,000 babies that are born each year will have some form of CHD.
“A congenital heart disease occurs when the heart and/or vessels near the heart don’t develop normally before birth.” According to the American Heart Association
CHD affect more children than many childhood cancer conditions. Twice as many children die from CHD than those affected by childhood forms of cancer
3,600 lives a year are taken by CHD, making CHD a heart disease to be aware of.
Shelby Jonely, GJHS Senior, has a niece with CHD and this affects her greatly “My niece is definitely a million dollar baby, “We have to make trips to Denver because hospitals in junction won’t do the operations” Jonely explained,
CHD can affect anyone and it is important to be aware of the effects it can have on families as well as the person with CHD.
